What is Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?
Medicare Supplement insurance, also known as Medigap, helps pay for some of the healthcare costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. These plans are sold by private insurance companies and work alongside your Original Medicare coverage.

Covers the deductibles you would otherwise pay out of pocket
Coinsurance and Copayments
Pays for your share of costs after Medicare pays its portion
Excess Charges
Covers charges above Medicare's approved amount from providers who don't accept assignment
Foreign Travel Emergency
Provides coverage for emergency care when traveling outside the U.S.
Skilled Nursing Facility Coinsurance
Covers your share of costs for extended skilled nursing facility stays

Medicare Supplement plans offer several advantages, especially for veterans who want to use both Medicare and VA benefits.

When Can You Enroll?
Medigap Open Enrollment Period
The best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This 6-month period begins the month you're 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this time, you have guaranteed issue rights, meaning insurance companies can't deny you coverage or charge you more due to pre-existing conditions.
After Open Enrollment
You can still buy a Medigap policy after your Open Enrollment Period, but you may be subject to medical underwriting, which could result in higher premiums or denial of coverage.
